DEPUTY MAYOR LAUNCHES CASH-FOR-WORK INITIATIVE TO ENHANCE CLEANLINESS IN THE CBD

Lusaka’s Deputy Mayor, Her Honour Ms. Ketty Nanyangwe, has implored women and youths in the city to actively take part in the cash for work program as a way of not only supporting their livelihood but also helping the city to uphold acceptable levels of cleanliness and fight diseases.

Ms. Nanyangwe has taken this decisive action to improve sanitation in the Central Business District (CBD), leveraging on the current Government initiative, cash-for-work.

This program aims to tackle cleanliness concerns by mobilizing local residents to participate directly in waste management and sanitation efforts.

During her visit to the Kulima Tower bus station, the Deputy Mayor engaged with station management and bus drivers, underscoring the importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.

“We actively need to work together to improve the levels of cleanliness in all public places, and I am urging all of you to work together so that we do not experience another episode of cholera breakout in the city,” said Ms. Nanyangwe.

She expressed disappointment to learn that the performance contractors headquartered outside of Lusaka, were the ones engaged to do the works hence creating obstacles in achieving effective waste management.

“The contracts awarded to performance contractors must be revisited,” stated Ms. Nanyangwe.

She further stated that it is impractical to assign such responsibilities to companies based in other towns, far from the areas they are contracted to serve.

She added that cleanliness and waste management works require immediate and consistent contractors who are readily available on site.

Ms. Nanyangwe addressed concerns regarding the practice of awarding contracts to undeserving individuals and urged everyone responsible of recommending contractors to ensure there is transparency and accountability in the selection process.

She further emphasized the importance of awarding contracts based on expertise and alignment with local needs, as advised by Government.

Ms. Nanyangwe remarked that the President has made it clear that contracts should be awarded to contractors within the town and constituencies they serve to ensure effectiveness in solid waste management.

She said that the Local Authority will remain visible to make sure that future contracts are awarded based on merit and ability to deliver quality services.

Lusaka City Council is currently working with Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, a subsidiary of the Council to manage solid waste in the City.
