Government Must Act Against Civil Servants Who Leak State Information

The Editor Zambia

The government must take stern and decisive action against any civil servant found guilty of leaking confidential State information to opposition political parties for purposes of undermining the operations of the government.

Public service is a position of trust, and anyone who abuses that trust for partisan political interests must be held accountable in accordance with the law.

The civil service is not a political battleground but a professional institution expected to serve the Republic of Zambia, regardless of which political party forms government.

Civil servants are paid by taxpayers to perform public duties, not to advance the interests of political parties or undermine an elected administration from within.

There are growing concerns that some individuals within government institutions may be exploiting their positions to supply opposition figures with sensitive information, which is subsequently presented to the public in ways intended to embarrass the government.

Where evidence exists to support such allegations, the authorities cannot afford to look the other way.
Most of the people leaking information to the opposition are former Patriotic Front (PF) members who have not accepted change and still have ties with the party.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) government must not hesitate to fire these officers and, in some cases, take them to court for prosecution.

An administration that tolerates the deliberate leaking of protected information risks compromising the integrity and effectiveness of public institutions.

The government must take this issue seriously, and where sufficient evidence establishes misconduct, dismissal should be the only way to rid institutions of such bad eggs.

Such an approach would ensure safeguarding the integrity of government institutions and deter officers from abusing their positions.

President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has a responsibility to ensure that public institutions operate professionally and that confidential government information is handled responsibly.

Every public officer must understand that serving the government of the day means carrying out lawful official duties while upholding the interests of the Republic.

The message must be clear: Where the evidence warrants dismissal, the government must not hesitate because public trust, institutional discipline, and national interest demand nothing less.
