PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has prioritised road infrastructure for rural connectivity, aiming to create opportunities and foster market linkages.
Despite misconceptions being spread by a clique of tribalists claiming the President has not initiated any projects since taking office, numerous road projects are underway nationwide.

The President understands that having top-notch road infrastructure is a total game-changer as it boosts economic growth, speedy transportation, increased trade, and commerce.

The president understands that good roads attract investments and make travelling easier, promoting local tourism and hospitality.
Here are some of the major road projects the government is working on
- 1. Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway
A 649 million dollar project upgrading 327 kilometres of road to a dual carriageway, rehabilitate 45 kilometelres of the Masangano-Fisenge-Luanshya Road, and construct approximately 30 kilometers of bypasses in Kabwe and Kapiri-Mposhi.
- Ndola-Sakania-Mufulira road
A 76.1 million dollar project for road construction and border infrastructure development, including 17.26km of Ndola-Sakania Road, 41.7km of Sakania to Mufulira Road, and 2.6km of selected sections of the Ndola Sakania Road in rigid pavement.
- Kasomena-Muenda Road and Bridge
Connecting Zambia to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the Luapula River, aiming to reduce travel time and costs.
- Lumwana-Kambimba Road and Border Infrastructure Project
31 million dollars projects involve upgrading 85 Km of the Lumwana to Kambimba Road to bituminous standard and construction of a One-Stop Border Post at Kambimba in North-Western Province.
- Mutanda-Kasempa-Kaoma road
A 326 million dollar project, upgrading of 371km stretch to international bituminous standards under a 25-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession.
The project includes upgrading 10km of urban roads in Kasempa and Kaoma towns and construction of two new bridges at Lalafuta and Luena rivers. This project aims to boost trade, improve safety, and enhance quality of life for communities along the corridor, connecting Zambia’s mineral-rich regions to West Coast Regions of Africa and South Africa
- The Chadza-Katete road
A 79.8 million dollar project 55-kilometer road is being reconstructed and maintained under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal with Lutembwe Construction Company Ltd.
- The Kaoma-Mutunda-Lukulu road
The 80-kilometer Katunda–Lukulu–Watopa–Mumbezhi road upgrade project has a contract value of approximately K1.43 billion. This project involve upgrading the road to bituminous standards and is being financed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, supported by the national treasury.
- Tateyoyo – Katunda road
A K1.3 billion rehabilitating an 87-km stretch of the main Lusaka-Mongu road (M9) from the Tateyoyo gate in Nkeyema District to Katunda – Kaoma
- Mazabuka-Monze road
A 900-million-kwacha rehabilitation project of 62-km maintenance and upgrade initiative which is approximately 80 per cent complete, with a target completion date of December 15, 2025, for the main works.
- Monze-Niko Road
A 940 million kwacha road project, which involves the rehabilitate and upgrade of a 71km stretch to bituminous standard connecting the districts of Monze, Namwala, and Itezhi-tezhi.
- Batoka-Maamba Road, D775
A 1.1-billion-kwacha road project of 88km upgrade focused on connecting Choma to Sinazongwe, vital for linking Maamba Collieries’ power expansion, local agriculture, and communities, with significant progress on bridges and diversions by late 2025, aiming for completion by 2026/2027.
- Samfya-Kasaba Road via Lubwe
A K940-million project to work on 80km of main road plus 5km of township roads, with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) handling it.
- Chipata-Chadiza road
A K1.3 billion 65-kilometer highway project currently under construction, with approximately 15 per cent of the project completed. The road is expected to be finished by June 2026, costing the government K1.3 billion. This project is part of the Great East Road rehabilitation project, aiming to enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and improve access to services in Eastern Province.
- Lusaka Decongestion Road project
Lusaka City is getting a major facelift with several road projects underway. The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is working on rehabilitating 40.17 Km of urban roads, including:
• Independence Avenue (3.34 km)
• Twin Palm Road (3.4 km)
• Chunga Dumpsite (2.9 km)
• Ibex Road (2.5 km)
• Great East Road (with extra lanes)
• Kamanga Road (with extra lanes)
These projects are funded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development at a cost of K1.8 billion, aiming to provide a safe and reliable road network
