ECL COURTED SANGWA, MUDOLO – Family member

A close family member of the late Patriotic Front (PF) leader has disclosed to The Candidates that it is true that Edgar Lungu had approached Constitutional lawyer State Counsel John Sangwa to take over the party, as his Plan B. Lungu also met with Willah Mudolo on several occasions, to discuss the possibility of him becoming a PF Presidential candidate.

Lungu had three people in mind, to replace him and was vetting them, separately. A family member has confirmed that Lungu died before revealing his choice.

According to the source, President Lungu had realized that there would be divisions in PF if he settled on any of the senior party officials. This is after the PF opened doors for people to pay nomination fees when he noticed that almost everyone in the Central Committee wanted to be President.

“To cure the situation, he (Edgar Lungu) looked outside the party and that is how he started talking to John Sangwa. He also met with Mudolo on several occasions in South Africa” the source says

The source explains that Lungu was looking for a new face, with credibility to give meaning to Rebranding of the former ruling party. He believed that Zambians would still reject the old PF faces.

“Ideally, he had three plans. Either Sangwa takes over as President or Mudolo. Again he thought if either of the two could agree to be running mate to the other,” the source reveals
