ECZ JUSTIFIES KAWAMBWA POLLS: “WE FOLLOWED CONCOURT RULING DESPITE STAY BY HIGH COURT ”

KAWAMBWA PF Member of Parliament Nickson Chilangwa’s lawyer Benjamin Mwelwa says the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is in defiance of the law by going ahead with by-elections in that constituency.

But ECZ says the decision to set the date for the Kawambwa Parliamentary by-elections was informed by the Constitutional Court’s ruling. In July this year, the Kawambwa Magistrates’ Court convicted and sentenced Chilangwa to 60 months imprisonment for malicious damage to property.

And on Wednesday, ECZ set December 20, 2024, for the National Assembly by-election in Kawambwa constituency.

Lunte PF Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya then rose on a matter of public importance in the National Assembly, saying ECZ would cause conflict if it proceeded with the by-elections.
