Governance Activist Daniel Sicholongo has attributed the sustained issuance of mining licenses in protected areas to a lack of climate change legislation and ineffective licensing committees in Zambia.
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana over the weekend announced that African Brothers withdrew their application for a mining exploration licence after realizing that they had encroached on the Lower Zambezi National Park.
However, Mr. Sichilongo says us climate action should not just be a un chatter matter and has called on zambia to stop issuing exploration licenses in protected areas like national parks as has been the case in past matters.
Mr. Sichilongo explains that the Kangalui mining licenses battle should have been a wake-up call for Zambia, but repeated mistakes in issuing these licenses are alarming.
He has urged Zambia to move from rhetoric to action by domesticating cop resolutions while desisting from turning the entire country into a mine even with abundant minerals.
