Zambia’s Global Appeal Remains Strong Despite Gonzales’s Remarks

The Editor Zambia

The recent international engagements undertaken by the Zambian government have once again demonstrated that the country continues to enjoy growing confidence and goodwill from the global community, contrary to the pessimistic narrative contained in the farewell remarks of outgoing United States Ambassador Michael Gonzales.

At a time when some critics are attempting to paint a gloomy picture of Zambia’s international standing, the reality on the ground tells a very different story.

Nations across Europe, Asia, Africa and even the United States itself continue to engage Zambia in trade, diplomacy and investment because they recognise the country’s enormous economic potential, political stability and strategic importance in the region.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe has rightly highlighted the importance of Zambia’s recent diplomatic engagements in Belgium, Sweden, Equatorial Guinea and Japan.

These meetings are not ceremonial exercises but practical economic diplomacy efforts aimed at attracting investment, strengthening bilateral relations, and positioning Zambia as a key player in regional and global development.

The country’s participation at the Africa Political Outlook Summit in Brussels sent a powerful message that Zambia is serious about industrialisation, value addition, and economic transformation.

Zambia’s emphasis on critical minerals and the Zambia-DRC battery value chain project has attracted international attention because the world is increasingly looking toward Africa for the future of green energy technologies.

Global powers understand that Zambia possesses critical resources necessary for the transition to cleaner energy systems.

This explains why international interest in Zambia’s mining sector continues to grow because if Zambia were truly isolated or viewed negatively by the international community as some would want citizens to believe, major economies would not continue pursuing partnerships with the country.

Equally important is the growing interest in infrastructure projects such as the Lobito Corridor. Zambia’s strategic geographic location makes it a natural transport and logistics hub for Southern and Central Africa.

International investors see this opportunity clearly and are eager to participate in projects that can unlock regional trade and economic growth.

The strengthening of ties with the European Union under the Global Gateway Strategy is another indication that confidence in Zambia remains high. The EU would not deepen cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and critical minerals if it lacked trust in Zambia’s governance and economic direction.

In Sweden, Zambia achieved another diplomatic milestone through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations.

Such agreements are evidence of mature and expanding bilateral relations. The focus on cooperation in energy, transport, and agriculture reflects the confidence that developed nations have in Zambia’s development agenda.

Japan’s recent high-level engagement with Zambia further exposes the weakness of attempts to portray the country negatively. Japan is one of the world’s leading economic powers and is known for taking long-term strategic investment decisions carefully.

Its commitment to encouraging Japanese companies to invest in Zambia’s mining, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors speaks volumes about the country’s attractiveness.

Even the United States itself continues to maintain strong economic and diplomatic relations with Zambia despite Ambassador Gonzales’ controversial farewell sentiments.

American businesses still view Zambia as a promising destination for investment, particularly in mining, energy, and technology.

The relationship between Zambia and the United States goes beyond the views of one departing diplomat.

Diplomatic relations between nations are built on shared interests, mutual respect, and long-term strategic cooperation.

They are not determined by individual opinions expressed during farewell speeches.

Zambia remains one of Africa’s most peaceful democracies with abundant natural resources, a youthful population, and significant economic potential.

What citizens must appreciate is that international relations are measured through actions rather than rhetoric. The actions of global partners toward Zambia clearly show continued confidence in the country’s future.

Investment discussions are increasing, bilateral partnerships are expanding, and Zambia’s visibility on the international stage continues to rise.

The New Dawn administration’s emphasis on economic diplomacy is beginning to yield results. By actively engaging with international partners and positioning Zambia as an investment destination, the government is laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and job creation.

Rather than dwelling on divisive statements from outgoing diplomats, Zambia must remain focused on strengthening its international partnerships and maximising opportunities arising from global cooperation.

The world is still willing to work with Zambia because the country remains an important and respected player in international affairs.
