Maternal Deaths Slow Down in NWP

ZANIS—North-Western Province has seen a significant reduction in maternal deaths owing to improved midwifery services.

In an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi, North-Western Province Public Health Specialist, Kizito Sampa, said despite challenges affecting mothers and newborns, there has been an improvement in the number of maternal cases being recorded in the province.

“In 2022, the whole province recorded 71 maternal deaths, in 2023, 51 cases, 2024 we reduced to 50 and this year in the first quarter we have recorded 17 but our aim is to completely record zero martenal cases in our facilities,” he said.

Dr. Sampa said midwives are key in having healthy mothers and children therefore, there is need to close the human resource gap when it comes to midwives.
