Two Rwandese nationals of Garden House area in Lusaka have been arrested after being found in possession of a huge consignment of Eagle’s mealie-meal without a valid vendor’s license.
The Zambia National Service -ZNS- has since seized 250 by 25kg bags of Eagle’s mealie-meal from the two rwandan nationals, which were intended for repackaging into smaller quantities.
The development came to light following a tip-off from an alert citizen which prompted ZNS personnel, led by Deputy Provost Marshal, Lieutenant Colonel Precious Mfula, to conduct a four-hour surveillance at Lusaka’s National Housing Complex.
With assistance from local residents, the ZNS troops unearthed more than 250 bags of 25kg mealie-meal, which were loaded into mini-buses, while additional bags were found stored inside a house.
And ZNS Commander Lieutenant General, Maliti Solochi has expressed disappointment with this development and has warned unscrupulous business people who are exploiting the service’ initiative to supply fairly priced mealie-meal to vendors.
Lieutenant General Solochi has condemned those involved in bulk buying of the commodity to illegally repackage it for illicit gains and has disclosed that he will be engaging Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba to ensure that the vice is curtailed.
And Mugisha Saen Mazie-Vianney, one of the ten individuals involved in the syndicate, confessed to repackaging the bulk mealie-meal into smaller plastic bags for resale on the black market.
