Chingola Mayor, Mr. Johnson Kangโ€™ombe, has called on Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to enhance its role in development by significantly increasing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Speaking during a scooping meeting focused on identifying community needs and potential development projects, Mayor Kangโ€™ombe emphasized that CSR is not merely a corporate obligation but a vital partnership that can drive sustainable development in the region.

He stated that Chingola District has various facilities in which the mine can invest, contributing to improving the quality of life for community members and addressing critical needs such as education, healthcare and infrastructure while also fostering goodwill and a positive relationship with the community.

The Mayor also highlighted that residents are eager to know how the US$20 million allocated for CSR by Vedanta Resources will be utilized, emphasizing the need for clarity on the allocation of these funds to ensure they effectively address the needs of the community.

During the meeting, Mayor Kangโ€™ombe commended KCM for organizing the scooping session, which facilitated important discussions around community needs and the environmental impact of mining operations.

During the meeting, various submissions were made by stakeholders, highlighting specific community needs and potential areas for collaboration.

Additionally, a presentation from the Bank of Zambia was shared, focusing on digital financial services and their role in promoting financial inclusion within the community.

Also present during the meeting was the District Commissioner Mr. Raphael Chimupi, Councillors from various wards, Council Director of Housing and Social Services Mr. Kamwata Pongo, Ward Development Committee (WDC) members and other stakeholders in the district.
