Mealie Meal Prices Drop.

PRICES of mealie meal has dropped across the country. This follows the increased supply of maize grain on the market.

Earlier in the week, the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) announced a nationwide reduction in mealie meal prices, with cuts ranging from K50 to K130 across all milling brands.

MAZ president Andrew Chintala attributed the price drop to positive indicators from the upcoming 2024/2025 maize marketing season, noting that strong market performance, driven by supply and demand, has influenced the adjustment.

Responding to MAZ’s call, Copperbelt based Antelope Milling company announced a 45.1% price reduction for a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal from K419 to K229.

The reductions have, however, thrown the opposition political parties in disarray as the escalating prices of the stable food were their main campaign message.

Outspoken opposition leaders such as Socialist Party president Fred M’membe, fugitive Patriotic Front (PF) chief propagandist, Emmanuel Mwamba, and other Tonse Alliance cronies such as Raphael Nakachinda run out campaign messages.

Nakachinda, who is the PF secretary general, cried out against the reduction of mealie meal prices, suggesting that the drop in the stable food prices will result in massive job losses.

Nakachinda was among opposition leaders who went around the country to urge citizens not to vote for the UPND in the 2026 general elections because of higher prices of mealie meal.
