The Zambia Police Service has issued a warning, emphasizing that while the Zambian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, this right must be exercised responsibly and within the bounds of the law.
The police has stated that any attempts to incite unlawful activities, undermine national security, or disrupt public order will not be tolerated.
Police spokesperson Rea Hamoonga urged citizens, particularly political leaders, to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid making statements that could mislead the public, create unnecessary panic, or threaten national peace and stability.
The police also cautioned against dragging the country’s Defense and Security wings into political discourse, warning that statements amounting to incitement or breaches of the law will not be tolerated.
The Zambia Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating that it will take appropriate action against individuals or groups found to be in violation of the law.
During the joint political parties briefing at Chrismar hotel, M’membe urged the country’s security forces, including the police, intelligence services, and the military, to remain loyal to the Constitution rather than to individual politicians.
M’membe urged them to reject any unconstitutional orders aimed at suppressing peaceful protests or other democratic actions by the people, indirectly referring to the executive organ of government.
