The Kitwe City Council has shut down 20 restaurants at Chisokone Market for failing to meet hygiene standards, posing serious public health risks amid ongoing cholera cases in the district.
The council’s Public Health Inspectorate Unit conducted inspections earlier today, enforcing the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Cap 295.
Inspectors found several food outlets operating in unsanitary conditions, with staff failing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), potentially exposing customers to health hazards.
Kitwe City Council Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Lupikisha has described the conditions in some restaurants as unacceptable, citing poor waste disposal, unclean cooking areas, and a lack of proper handwashing facilities.
Authorities have warned that more closures could follow if businesses fail to comply with food safety standards.
