Patriotic Front Acting President Robert Chabinga says it is shocking and a betrayal to the Zambian people that the once-brutal PF regime, led by Edgar Lungu, is accusing President Hakainde Hichilema of human rights violations, which are the very rights they denied him, yet they are enjoying their rights under this government.
Mr. Chabinga says it is hypocritical for Edgar Lungu and his group to claim to be victims of human rights abuses when, under his watch, human rights did not exist.
Mr. Chabinga says that, to the contrary, Patriotic Front leaders are enjoying their human rights to assembly, speech, and association, as provided for in the constitution, without any harassment from the members of the ruling party.
He says everyone is enjoying their freedoms freely, without any intimidation from the police or members of the ruling party, which was not the case under the former President Edgar Lungu.
He says it is shocking that some members of the former ruling party are accusing President Hichilema of human rights violations when they are freely moving around the country, making appearances on the very media houses they denied him access to.
Mr. Chabinga also said that, in the past, the media was subjected to harassment, suppression, and a lack of freedom of speech.
He stated that the closure of critical media houses, such as Prime Television, and the harassment of journalists were systematically calculated to instill fear among human rights defenders, opposition political parties, and anyone with divergent views.
He says that, under Mr. Lungu’s rule, the media house became a hostile environment for the opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema and other political parties, preventing them from expressing their opinions.
