Lusaka criminals shoot businessman in broad daylight, steal his K950,000

A DAYLIGHT robbery in Lusaka has left a man fighting for his life after he was shot and robbed of K950,000 in cash yesterday afternoon.

The incident is said to have occurred around 13:50 hours near the junction of Lumumba and Malambo roads in Lusaka.

The victim, Sydney Mateyo, aged between 40 and 45, was targeted shortly after withdrawing the large sum of money from Stanbic Bank on Mukatasha Road. Accompanied by his employee, Jackson Nsokolo, 26.

The duo is reported to have been traveling in an unregistered white Mitsubishi Canter when they were ambushed by four armed criminals in a white, unregistered Toyota Mark X.

According to police reports, three of the assailants exited their vehicle, two wielding pistols and one carrying a pump-action firearm, while the fourth suspect remained inside the car.

The attackers confronted Mateyo and demanded the black bag containing the money.

And when Mateyo resisted their threats, one of the robbers shot him in the left armpit before fleeing with the cash.

Zambia Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga who confirmed the incident said after being shot, Mateyo was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where his condition is reported as critical.

Hamoonga said Medical reports indicate that the bullet remains lodged in his body while his employee, Nsokolo, escaped the ordeal unharmed.

“Police visited the scene and recovered a pistol cartridge. The Zambia Police Service has launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen money,” said Hamoonga.

Further, Hamoonga appealed to the members of the public that may have any information concerning the incident or know the suspects to immediately report to the nearest police station or contact the hotlines 9010 or 991.

He assured the public that efforts are being made to bring the criminals to justice and emphasised the importance of vigilance, particularly when handling large sums of cash.
