FORMER Patriotic Front (PF) deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri has been arrested for aggravated robbery in a matter involving a stolen Infinix phone and K20,000 cash.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, Mrs Phiri was detained following a complaint filed by a Mr. Boldwin Chilambikwa, 28, at Kawambwa Police Station on December 18, 2024.
In his report, Mr. Chilambikwa alleged that his Infinix cellphone, valued at K3,800 and K20,000 cash, were stolen by a suspect identified as Peter, who was allegedly accompanied by Mumbi Phiri.
The incident occurred at Chisheta Primary School in Kawambwa District around 18:00 hours.
Mr Hamoonga said the complainant stated that he was with Minister of Green Economy and Environment Honourable Mike Mposha and other UPND members when they were confronted by a group from the Tonse Alliance, allegedly led by Mumbi Phiri.
“During this time, a group from the Tonse Alliance, allegedly led by Mrs. Mumbi Phiri confronted them and accused them of collecting voter’s cards from members of the public in collaboration with the ECZ team.
In the ensuing altercation, the suspect, Peter, used a Taser gun on the complainant, causing him to fall to the ground. While he was incapacitated, the suspect grabbed his cellphone and cash, which had reportedly been given to him by the Honourable Minister for fuel,” Mr Hamoonga said.
Mr Hamoonga said a docket has since been opened.
“A docket of aggravated robbery was opened, and investigations into the matter are ongoing. We assure the public that the Zambia Police Service is committed to thoroughly investigating this incident and ensuring that justice prevails,” he said.
He called on members of the public with any additional information regarding this case to assist the police.
