THREE people have died following a road accident that occurred yesterday afternoon along the Great North Road near Banani International School in Chisamba District.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 13:00 hours.
Involved were three motor vehicles, a Sino Truck bearing registration number, BCG 3115, and Trailer Number, BCG 3128 which was being driven by Mutabo Pervious, aged 50, of Ndola Township heading to Lusaka.
The second driver was Chiyemba Chiyemba, aged 37, of 15 Miles, Chibombo District, also traveling towards the Lusaka direction in a Toyota Wish with Registration Number, BAT 3000.
Also involved was a Mercedes Benz Light Truck with Registration Number, CAE 6092, driven by Kelvin Banda, aged 32, of Lusaka, with two passengers on board, traveling from the opposite direction coming from Lusaka.
Banda, in the Benz Light Truck failed to keep to his lane and collided with the oncoming Sino Truck.
The impact of the collision caused the Benz Light Truck to further collide with the Toyota Wish, which was traveling behind the Sino Truck.
Following the incident, Banda and one male passenger lost their lives on the spot.
Another female passenger whose identity is yet to be known succumbed to injuries upon arrival at Liteta District Hospital.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga also confirmed that the driver of the Sino Truck sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted to Liteta District Hospital.
Meanwhile, the third driver of the Toyota Wish and its passengers escaped without injuries.
“The accident left the Benz Light Truck and Sino Truck extensively damaged while the Toyota Wish had its front and roof damaged.
“The Zambia Police Traffic Unit is conducting further investigations into this unfortunate incident. We urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to avoid such tragic accidents,” Hamoonga said.
Hamoonga further encouraged people with information regarding the accident or those who can identify the victims whose identity is yet to be established to contact Liteta Police Station or the nearest police post.
