The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) has instructed its members to stay away from work starting today until the university management settles the outstanding November salaries.
According to UNZALARU Secretary General, Dr. Kelvin Mambwe, the union is frustrated with the persistent delays in salary payments, transport allowances, and other essential benefits.
Dr. Mambwe emphasized that these delays could compromise critical university operations, such as examinations, and jeopardize the timely release of results.
He urged the Ministries of Finance and Education to intervene in the matter. Dr. Mambwe also expressed concern over the lack of political will to address the financial challenges facing the University of Zambia (UNZA), particularly in the wake of post-pandemic financial pressures.
He noted that workers are being forced to borrow money to cover transportation costs and perform their duties, while the employer appears unconcerned about their welfare
