The Embassy of Sweden in Zambia has released $1 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to support humanitarian efforts in the country.
Swedish Ambassador Joan Hellenborg says the funds will enable UNFPA to provide critical services, including sexual and reproductive health interventions and programs addressing gender-based violence in drought-affected areas.
Hellenborg stressed that combating sexual exploitation is a top priority for Sweden, adopting a zero-tolerance approach.
He noted that gender-based violence and sexual exploitation undermine the vital work of humanitarian workers, therefore, preventing such abuses should be a priority in all relief interventions.
The ambassador also highlighted Zambia’s prolonged drought and cholera outbreak, which have disrupted essential services across all 10 provinces.
He emphasized the importance of accountability to crisis-affected populations when delivering aid.
The ambassador stated that the contribution reflects Sweden’s ongoing commitment to supporting UNFPA’s mission, particularly in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender equality.
