The Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) strongly condemns the unacceptable behavior and verbal abuse exhibited by Mpika Constituency Member of Parliament Francis Robert Kapyanga towards his Mwandi counterpart Sibeso K. Sefulo in Parliament.
According to Council Chairperson Beauty Katebe, the NGOCC is deeply concerned about the alarming trend of male MPs targeting female parliamentarians with derogatory remarks.
While acknowledging Kapyanga’s apology and subsequent disciplinary actions.
Ms. Katebe emphasizes that such comments deliberately undermine and disrespect women in leadership.
The NGOCC stresses that MPs must uphold the highest standards of parliamentary decorum, refraining from uncouth language.
Apologies alone cannot undo the harm caused by inflammatory remarks, which damage individuals’ self-esteem and reputation.
Zambia’s underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions, particularly in Parliament and local government, is a pressing concern.
The NGOCC attributes this to the pervasive culture of male leaders and citizens demeaning female leaders, discouraging women and youth from pursuing leadership roles.
The council urges parliamentarians and the public, especially men, to promote an inclusive environment where citizens can participate in leadership without fear of sexism or retribution.
