The UPND government is plundering national resources through the sale of national assets such as Mopani Copper Mines Plc, alleges Socialist Party General Secretary Dr Cosmas Musumali.
Dr. Musumali says the sale of national assets such as Mopani Copper Mines, should have been tabled before Parliament for approval.
The SP General Secretary indicated that the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe has been laboring to explain the transaction between the government and International Resources Holdings, that acquired shares in the mine.
He said so far, Hon Kabuswe has given two ministerial statements over the same transaction, but has failed to give a convincing reason why the matter was not taken to the House.
“Our laws say that when our assets are being sold, Parliament should be involved. According to Hon Paul Kabuswe, he states that there was no sale that took place, and that is confusing. He had to give two ministerial statements, and I would request Zambians to to look at his body language as he was delivering those statements. He is a man who is disoriented, he is a man who didn’t understand what he was talking about. Basically they are stealing,” he said.
“They just speak and don’t say the truth. They contradict each other! So International Resources Holdings has gotten shares of Mopani. So what transaction is it if it is not the sale? Was it a gift? Even if it was a gift, Parliament should be involved. There is high level of corruption!”
Dr Musumali has also urged the UPND government to ensure that they fight corruption without favor.
He told Journalists in Lusaka that there are a lot of corruption deals happening in sectors like agriculture, energy and other sectors but that the leadership is quiet about such scandals.
