President Hakainde Hichilema has underscored the importance of increasing women and youth participation in governance, emphasizing the need for legal reforms to achieve this goal.

Speaking at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Lusaka, President Hichilema stressed that Zambia requires legislation that enhances the participation of women, youths, and persons with disabilities in governance.

To achieve this, President Hichilema proposes amending the Constitution to include affirmative action clauses, promoting greater representation of women, youths, and persons with disabilities.

He also advocates for a collaborative effort involving the private sector, NGOs, churches, and government to combat Gender-Based Violence.

President Hichilema acknowledged the hostile environment that hinders women’s active participation in politics, including increased cyberbullying and violence on social media platforms.

He emphasized the importance of educating both boys and girls, encouraging families to openly discuss the negative effects of Gender-Based Violence.

Furthermore, President Hichilema urged Zambians to report cases of GBV, promoting a culture of accountability and support.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is commemorated under the theme “Towards Beijing +30 Unite: to End Violence against women and girls”.
