Zambia joined the global community in launching the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed from November 25th to December 10th.

This yearโ€™s commemoration is held under the theme: โ€œTowards Beijing +30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls.โ€ The eventโ€™s Guest of Honour was His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, who was joined by senior Government officials and delegates.

In his address, President Hichilema urged men to reflect on their behaviour, particularly in relation to alcohol consumption, which is often linked to incidents of gender-based violence. โ€œI encourage everyone to stay away from alcohol abuse, as intoxication often leads to regrettable actions. Men must rise to the challenge of being champions and allies in ending violence against women and girls,โ€ he said.

Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Patrick Kangwa, highlighted commitment from the public service towards implementing Government Policies aimed at eradicating Gender-Based Violence. He stated, โ€œviolence against women and girls cannot be eliminated unless the entire Government joins hands in this fight.โ€

Additionally, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Zambia, Ms. Beatrice Mutali, reaffirmed the UNโ€™s partnership with the Government in this cause. She noted, โ€œAs we mark 30 years since the Beijing Platform for Action, the United Nations in Zambia stands ready to renew its commitment to protecting women and girls. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without their active involvement and protection.โ€

The event underscored the need for collective action to build a safer and more equitable society for all.
