Editor’s Opinion: Over View
Corrupt elements and criminal minds are taking advantage of President Hakainde Hichilema’s kindness and forgiving heart to sabotage the country for political gains and personal benefits.
We’ve observed that the spirit of forgiveness and an olive branch of Patriotic Front-aligned civil servants is now working against the United Party for National Development and President Hichilema.
They’re doing everything possible to cause frustration and panic among citizens, creating an environment that portrays the economy as being on its knees. It’s shocking to see transporters and bus operators protesting against punishment for a specific transporter that caused an accident, resulting in loss of lives due to negligence. Doesn’t the safety of passengers matter in this case?
Here are some practical examples:
- The Constituency Development Fund Game Changer Programme: Some aligned and political elements left by the former party are frustrating the program. District council officials are deliberately delaying the implementation of CDF projects, which they feel will work against their PF masters.
- The Fight Against Corruption and Forfeiture of Illegally Acquired Assets: Some judges are not supporting the cause. For instance, the Court of Appeal in Ndola has granted former First Lady Esther Lungu and her daughter, Tasila, leave to appeal against the forfeiture of their properties by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court.
- Reports of Water Tanks Punctured at ZESCO: This incident has affected sections like the Registry, Renewable Energy, Corporate Affairs, and MD’s Office, with all documents submerged in water, meaning all evidence has been destroyed.
- Bus Operators’ Protest: A standoff between InterCity bus operators and the government has left hundreds of passengers stranded. The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) suspended Juldan Motorways’ Road Service Licence for three months due to non-compliance with GPS installation requirements and violating the ban on night driving.
It’s clear that political conmen and corrupt elements have infiltrated the private and public sectors.
The UPND party needs to step up its game, and people surrounding the president should take their responsibilities more seriously. Instead of competing for attention, they should focus on getting the job done. If things continue this way, we’ll face serious challenges, and the economy will be paralyzed.
