Local Government and Rural Development Minister GARRY NKOMBO says agriculture levies are essential to the operations of local councils.
In an interview with ZNBC News, Mr. NKOMBO explained that the ministry cannot abolish levies, but only scale down and standardise them.
He emphasised that most local authorities rely heavily on locally generated revenues to function.
His statement comes in response to Zambia National Farmers Union -ZNFU- President JERVIS ZIMBA’s call to government to abolish the levies.
Mr. ZIMBA said this during the recent -ZNFU- Annual General Meeting.
