The Finnish Ambassador to Zambia, Her Excellency Saana Halinen, has led a Finnish delegation on a tour of duty at the Lusaka City Council (LCC).
The ambassador and her team called on Her Worship, the Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala before proceeding to a meeting attended by the Mayor, LCC management and a team from the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company.
During the meeting, the Mayor highlighted some of the challenges the council faces in managing solid waste which led to the creation of the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company whose mandate is to increase capacity to manage the city’s waste effectively.
Ms. Chitangala highlighted that one of the key interventions in solid waste management is raising awareness, as it has the potential to change people’s perceptions and behaviours regarding waste management.
LCC Director of Public Health, Victor Kagoli disclosed that food waste accounts for 59.67% of the total waste generated in the city.
Mr. Kagoli explained that if properly managed, this waste could be recycled and converted into smart and clean energy.
The Finnish team also had the opportunity to discuss the strides made in waste sorting and recycling.
The Finnish Delegation has since visited Aerizo Industries Limited, a local recycling company to appreciate and learn about some of the strides being made in the management of waste in the city.
