The Mwenda Chiefdom of Chikankata District in Southern Province came alive with celebration as scores of people gathered for the annual Bansanje Lwiindi ceremony Saturday morning.
The traditional event, celebrated under the theme, “Celebrating God’s blessings amidst climate change in unity and diversity.
” drew participants from across the country, symbolizing cultural pride and national solidarity.
Hope Chooma reports that the ceremony was graced by Luapula Province Minister Hon. Njavwa Simutowe, who was the guest of honor.
In his address, Hon. Simutowe expressed his joy at being part of the event, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional customs as the ceremony plays a vital role in safeguarding traditions.
He says, this year’s theme resonates strongly as the nation strives to overcome challenges such as the recent drought.
He assured attendees of the government’s commitment to improving lives and fostering development as the UPND Government will continue to support cultural events and not leave any chiefdom behind in developmental efforts, highlighting the government’s plans to complete the construction of Chieftainess Naluama’s residence.
Meanwhile, Chikankata MP hon. Jacqueline Sabao Highlighted Unity and Development, underscoring the event’s significance in promoting unity.
She adds that the presence of 16 chiefs, including four (4) from other provinces, is a testament to the unity we have as a country.
The Lawmaker further took the opportunity to showcase the various developmental programs initiated under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) by the New Dawn Government.
She However, also voiced concern over the challenges facing the district, particularly the deteriorating state of the Chikankata Mission Road stating that it is disappointing seeing the contractor assigned to this project not mobilized to the site since 2022.
She charged and since urged the UPND Government to consider appointing another contractor to expedite this project, cautioning that further delays could erode public confidence in the government’s ability to deliver essential infrastructure.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the Mwenda Lwiindi ceremony, Lasson Mapulanga, extended his gratitude to all who attended as affirmation of the importance of traditions and the bond that keeps the community together.
The Bansanje Lwiindi ceremony not only celebrated the cultural legacy of the Mwenda Chiefdom but also brought to light the shared aspirations and challenges faced by the people of Chikankata as a powerful reminder that while tradition is cherished, ongoing development is essential for the well-being of all citizens.
