Residents of the 7070 area have received their long-awaited resettlement packages, allowing for the demolition of affected properties to make way for the construction of a crucial drainage system.
This project is part of the government’s efforts to upgrade infrastructure and address the area’s recurring cholera outbreaks.
Nicholas Phiri, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, confirmed the successful completion of compensation payments and commended the residents for their cooperation. Property owners in the affected area have confirmed receipt of the funds, which will bring relief to their households as the project moves forward.
The Zambia National Service (ZNS), through its site commandant, Brigadier General Jason Kaputa Mukanda, Chief of the Lands Development Branch, assured residents and the Permanent Secretary of their commitment to complete the drainage project within a 3 months deadline.
Mr. Phiri explained that property valuations were conducted fairly, based on market value with an added 20% to cover inflation and relocation costs, ensuring a fair and comprehensive compensation for the affected residents.
With the demolition phase underway and resettlement packages distributed, the 7070 drainage project is set to significantly improve health and living conditions within the area.
