Government has handed over 420 goats to vulnerable but viable households in Chasefu District of Eastern Province.
The development worth over K300,000 is one of the projects implemented from recoveries generated under the Food Security Pack Programme (FSP).
Chasefu District Community Development Officer Joseph Mwanza says that each household in Kapilisanga ward will receive three goats; one male and two female, each.
Mr. Mwanza explained that the beneficiary households , 150 in total, are expected to raise the goats on a pass-on basis, thereby expanding the programme’s reach.
He also disclosed that the district raised over one million kwacha from recoveries under FSP, which has been allocated to various community projects, including this livestock initiative.
“This recovery Programme is an effective way to ensure that many households receive the necessary support. By providing goats, we are not just addressing immediate food needs but also promoting long-term economic sustainability,” he highlighted.
The Community Development Officer further revealed that the district recovery account still holds additional funds that will be used to benefit more vulnerable households.
And Chasefu District Commissioner Jimmy Phiri commended the initiative as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of rural communities.
Mr. Phiri also urged beneficiaries to take responsibility for their new livestock, underscoring the importance of proper care and management.
“These animals should be kept safely and not sold off prematurely. The success of this program relies on the commitment of each household to nurture these goats,” he stated.
